CreatorCarl Reinhoild Sahlberg et al.
Place of OriginGlobal
Datelate 18th century-early 19th century
DescriptionThe first Finnish natural history collections were destroyed in the Great Fire of Turku in 1827. Some insect drawers remain at the University of Turku as reminders of the early phases of Scandinavian natural history. According to the legend, they were rescued by students of the Royal Academy of Turku. The collections contain specimens collected, for example, by Carl Peter Thunberg, Leonard Gyllenhaal and Carl Reinhold Sahlberg – thus reflecting early networks of European scientists.
