Tapestry-Moses striking water from the rock

CreatorPhileppe Wauters
Place of OriginAntwerp; Belgium
Date17th century
DescriptionThis tapestry is part of one of the largest surviving sets by Philip Wauters of Antwerp, which depicts the life of Moses; although it is not a complete set, as it does not include the ‘parting of the Red Sea’ and the ‘Giving of the Ten Commandments’. Once the home to the powerful Prince-Bishops of Durham, it is likely that these tapestries have resided in Durham Castle since the 17th century.
