Skeleton of a female adult bowhead or Greenland whale (Balaena mysticetus)

Place of OriginThe whale was captured in November 1867 before the coast of Greenland, in the vicinity of the port of Sisimiut.
DateAcquired in 1867 by P.J. Van Beneden through the services of J.T. Reinhardt, professor zoology in Copenhagen
DescriptionAt the time of acquisition, there were only four similar skeletons in European museums. Professor Pierre Joseph Van Beneden was an internationally renowned expert on whales. The whale was captured in November 1867 off the coast of Greenland.
