DescriptionWhen the Maritime Museum of Åbo Akademi was founded in 1936, it was the first of its kind in Finland. The most precious object, the three-masted barque Sigyn, was acquired in 1939. Built in Gothenburg in Sweden 1887 the Sigyn is a maritime monument of great and international importance. Today Sigyn is the only intact example of this important type of sailing vessel; which for nearly 500 years played a fundamental role in the development of the modern world. She crossed the equator 36 times and the Atlantic Ocean 56 times during her 50 years as a merchantman.
