DescriptionThis division of the Collection totals over 90 instruments. It is of pre-eminent international importance, and allows a rich and varied display of harpsichord family instruments. Nearly every item is important for reasons relevant to research and teaching, and in some cases performance potential.

Custodial HistoryThree items were acquired by the Reid Professor of Music by the 1850s, two of which were possibly acquired by the University earlier than this. Nineteen further items have come from the Raymond Russell Collection, donated by his mother in 1964. Twenty-three items were donated by Rodger Mirrey in 2005. Further items have been purchased with support from the Friends of St Cecilia’s Hall and Museum; some items are on loan from National Museums of Scotland and other lenders.
