| Description | This magnificent collection of 107 historic woodwind instruments was exhibited in the Reid Concert Hall Museum of Instruments in 1968 and its move to Edinburgh stimulated plans for re-establishing the Edinburgh University Collection as a collection historic musical instruments of international importance. F. Geoffrey Rendall (1890-1952) was a professional librarian and an amateur clarinettist. His professional career was devoted to the Department of Printed Books at the British Museum culminating in his appointment as Keeper of Printed Books. He was the outstanding scholar of the clarinet in his day and his book on the instrument is still a standard text. |

| Custodial History | The Geoffrey Rendall collection of historic musical instruments was given in trust to Graham Melville-Mason in 1967 and placed on loan to the Galpin Society in 1969, from when it was displayed at the Reid Concert Hall Museum of Instruments. The ownership was finally transferred to the University in 1980. |
